Nigeria have written a new chapter in Africa Cup of Nations history by matching a rare record previously held only by Egypt.
With their 2-0 win over Algeria in the 2025 quarterfinals, the Super Eagles have now scored at least two goals in each of their first five matches at a single Afcon edition.
Before Nigeria’s run in Morocco, this achievement belonged solely to Egypt, who managed it twice, in the 1974 and 2010 tournaments. The statistic underlines how powerful and consistent Nigeria’s attack has been in this competition so far.
Against Algeria, Nigeria dominated almost all of the first half but wasted several clear chances and went into the break at 0-0. Early in the second half, Victor Osimhen finally broke the deadlock with a well‑taken goal, before Akor Adams doubled the lead in the 57th minute to seal a deserved 2-0 victory.
Earlier in the knockout rounds, Nigeria had thrashed Mozambique 4-0 in the round of 16, while Algeria had needed extra time to edge DR Congo 1-0.
The latest result not only pushed Nigeria into the semifinals but also confirmed their place alongside Egypt in the competition’s statistical elite.
