Real Madrid and Germany defender Antonio Rüdiger has spent his off-season in Sierra Leone, his mother’s country, using the break not for rest but to deepen his humanitarian work and reconnect with his African roots.
It was Rüdiger’s third visit to Sierra Leone through his charitable foundation, and once again the focus was firmly on people and communities often left behind. During his stay, the 31-year-old organised a large community meal for more than 200 people living with disabilities, including those who are blind, deaf and physically disabled.
“These trips give me more energy than any other vacation,” Rüdiger said. “Humanitarian work motivates me and teaches me new lessons, and I will continue to come back.”
In a country where access to sport and education can be limited, Rüdiger also turned his attention to young people. In the Kono District in eastern Sierra Leone, he supported more than 350 young footballers, providing full kits and equipment in partnership with sportswear brand Under Armour. He later joined them on the pitch, training alongside the youngsters and sharing words of encouragement.
The defender also met with athletes living with disabilities and invited the German ambassador to Sierra Leone to discuss possible future cooperation and support structures. Away from football, Rüdiger spent time with around 100 at-risk children, most of them girls, committing to long-term help focused on education, nutrition and life-skills workshops.
Medical supplies were donated to a local public hospital as part of the visit, underlining the wide scope of the foundation’s work beyond sport alone.
“Football has given me everything,” Rüdiger added. “Giving hope, structure and confidence to young players is the least I can do.”
For Rüdiger, whose career has taken him to the very top of European football, the trip was a reminder of where his journey is rooted. And for many in Sierra Leone, his presence offered more than charity, it brought visibility, encouragement and a sense that they have not been forgotten.
