Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler has hinted that discussions over a new contract for Danny Welbeck could begin soon, as the England forward with Ghanaian heritage continues to enjoy an impressive season on the south coast.
Welbeck’s current deal is due to expire at the end of the campaign, but his form has reignited debate about his long-term future at the club and even prompted talk of a possible return to the England setup ahead of next summer’s World Cup.
The 33-year-old, whose parents are from Ghana but he represents England at international level, has been a key figure in Brighton’s attack, combining experience with goals and leadership in a young squad.
Speaking ahead of Brighton’s Premier League clash with West Ham, Hürzeler was careful not to be drawn into specifics, but made it clear how highly the club values the striker.
“We never speak about any personal situation of a player in public,” Hürzeler said. “But we all know how important Danny Welbeck is. He knows it, the club knows it, so let’s see what happens.”
Welbeck’s performances have not gone unnoticed beyond Brighton. His sharp movement, work rate and ability to link play have led some to suggest he could yet force his way back into England contention, adding to Thomas Tuchel’s options up front.
For Brighton, securing Welbeck’s future would be a significant boost as they look to build on recent progress and maintain stability within the squad. While talks have not yet been confirmed, Hürzeler’s comments suggest the door is open and that both player and club are aware of the value of what they have together.
