Sudan recorded their first Africa Cup of Nations victory since 2012 on Sunday as they edged past Equatorial Guinea 1-0 in Casablanca, boosting their chances of reaching the knockout stage at the 2025 tournament.
A second successive defeat for Equatorial Guinea in Group E leaves them facing a difficult path to progression.
On the matchday, the decisive moment came 16 minutes from time when Saul Coco inadvertently turned a cross past his own goalkeeper, Jesus Owono, bringing an end to Sudan’s eight-match winless run at the AFCON.
The narrow victory followed a tightly contested encounter marked by missed chances, just days after Sudan had suffered defeat to Algeria.
Forced to play their qualifiers outside the country due to the ongoing civil war, Sudan’s latest result places them firmly in contention to advance, joining Burkina Faso and Algeria on three points apiece.
They will face Burkina Faso in their final group match in Casablanca on Wednesday, while Equatorial Guinea meet Algeria in Rabat knowing only a win will give them a realistic chance of progressing as one of the best third-placed teams.
Led by Ghanaian tactician James Kwesi Appiah, Sudan are determined to give their all to reach the knockout stage of AFCON 2025.
