'I want to win the Carabao Cup with Newcastle' – Yoane Wissa

Yoane Wissa has set his sights firmly on winning the Carabao Cup with Newcastle United, describing the pursuit of silverware as his immediate priority after finally making his first start for the club following a long-awaited recovery from injury.

The DR Congo forward returned to the starting line-up on Wednesday night after completing his £55 million move from Brentford and overcoming a knee problem that delayed his debut.

Wissa marked the occasion in emphatic fashion, scoring inside the opening 10 minutes to give supporters an early glimpse of the sharp instincts and movement he brings to Newcastle’s attack.

Speaking after the match, Wissa underlined the significance of the moment and his ambition with the club.

“I’ve been here and knew it was special,” he told Sky Sports. “Now playing with the Newcastle shirt, it is different. Very happy today.”

“Winning a cup is special. They did it last year when I wasn’t there, so now I want to do it,” Wissa added.

Although not yet at full fitness, Wissa’s influence extended beyond his goal. He showed visible frustration when moves broke down, demanding quicker service from teammates, and drew a loud response from the crowd after tracking back to make a firm tackle on Emile Smith Rowe.

His performance was warmly received, capped by a standing ovation when he was replaced later in the game.

Wissa’s return is expected to offer Newcastle a different attacking dimension in the weeks ahead. His pace and work rate should help relieve pressure on Nick Woltemade, who has carried a heavy burden in recent matches.
