Valencia reopen talks for Nigeria striker Sadiq Umar as uncertainty grows at Real Sociedad

Valencia have revived their interest in Nigeria striker Sadiq Umar ahead of the January transfer window, with the forward’s future at Real Sociedad once again under scrutiny as he struggles for regular playing time in La Liga.

The Super Eagles international has endured a frustrating spell in San Sebastián since arriving from Almería in 2022 for a club-record fee of €20 million.

Expectations were high following his prolific form with his former club, but Sadiq’s momentum was abruptly halted when he suffered a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury in just his second appearance for Real Sociedad.

The setback proved decisive, and his attempts to regain consistency have since been disrupted by limited opportunities and stiff competition.

Now 28, Sadiq has found himself on the margins of the squad this season.

He has featured in only two league matches and was named in the starting line-up just once, a situation that has prompted renewed speculation about a possible exit.

The lack of minutes follows a loan spell at Valencia last season, where he enjoyed a more encouraging run of form and hinted at a return to his best.

During that loan period, Sadiq scored six goals in 19 appearances, playing a meaningful role in several key results for Valencia.

His physical presence and movement gave the side a different attacking dimension, and his contributions were widely viewed as a positive step in his recovery from injury.

Despite that impact, negotiations between Valencia and Real Sociedad over a permanent transfer failed to produce an agreement.

Talks continued until the final stages of the summer transfer window, with Sadiq reportedly keen on the move, but no deal was concluded.

Back at Real Sociedad, hopes of a revival were briefly raised when then-head coach Sergio Francisco suggested the striker would be given increased opportunities.

That promise, however, went unfulfilled before Francisco’s dismissal, leaving Sadiq once again facing an uncertain role.

According to reports from elgoldigital, Valencia are now preparing to make another move, with head coach Carlos Corberan identifying Sadiq as a priority target for January.

The club view him as a forward capable of strengthening their attacking options, particularly given his previous familiarity with the squad and league.

However, any potential transfer could be complicated by developments at Real Sociedad.

The club is expected to appoint American coach Pellegrino Matarazzo following Francisco’s departure, a change that may alter Sadiq’s prospects.

A new manager is likely to assess the squad afresh, potentially offering the Nigerian striker a renewed chance to impress.

Real Sociedad are also under no immediate pressure to sell. Sadiq remains under contract until 2028, and the club may prefer to retain him if he can rediscover his form.

Much will depend on Matarazzo’s assessment and whether Valencia are able to meet the Spanish side’s expectations.
