Kenya head coach Benni McCarthy was among the personalities honoured by President William Ruto during Jamhuri Day celebrations, marking the country’s independence.
The South African football legend received the Head of State Commendation in recognition of his impact and leadership with the national team.
McCarthy guided the Harambee Stars to a historic quarter-final finish at the African Nations Championship (CHAN), achieving the feat in the team’s debut appearance at the tournament.
In a statement shared on social media, the Harambee Stars congratulated their head coach, praising his leadership and guidance throughout CHAN 2024.
The team noted that the honour reflects the discipline, belief and hard work instilled under McCarthy, describing it as a proud moment for Kenyan football.
McCarthy also expressed his appreciation to the Kenyan government, led by President Ruto, for acknowledging the role football plays in society and for its continued support towards the growth and development of the sport in the country, adding that efforts would continue to build a stronger future for Kenyan football.
