Nadal urges Vinícius to respect authority in ongoing tension with Xabi Alonso
Spanish tennis legend and lifelong Real Madrid supporter Rafael Nadal has weighed in on the ongoing tension between Vinícius Junior and head coach Xabi Alonso, expressing confidence that the situation can still be resolved despite recent reports of strain.
The conflict surfaced after claims emerged that Vinícius told club president Florentino Pérez he would not renew his contract if his relationship with Alonso failed to improve.
The winger’s dissatisfaction has sparked concern within the club, raising questions about his long-term future at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Speaking on Movistar+’s Universo Valdano, Nadal urged both parties to seek common ground through open communication.
He emphasised that while Vinícius has shown commitment to improving his game, he must also recognise the importance of respecting the club’s hierarchy.
“I think the situation can be resolved through dialogue, because everyone is on the same side. I believe Vinícius needs to understand who is in charge and respect that, given what it means to be a Real Madrid player. But I think he is doing everything he can, and what comes from him that is sometimes perceived negatively can be corrected through dialogue,” Nadal said.
Nadal added that the Brazilian star must take personal initiative to grow, stressing the value of strong guidance within his inner circle and the club.
“When I hear him say in interviews that he wants to improve in all areas, I think he needs to find strong allies, and I’m sure there are people at Real Madrid and in his circle who can give him advice,” Nadal noted.
With both the club and the player keen to avoid escalating tensions, Nadal’s call for unity underscores hopes that the rift can be mended before it affects Real Madrid’s plans on and off the pitch.
