Gabonese star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang inspires Marseille revival with brilliant start to the season

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hit a major career milestone on Friday night, netting the 400th professional goal of his career as Marseille demolished Nice 5-1.

The Gabonese forward opened the scoring with a close-range finish, continuing his impressive form under Roberto De Zerbi.

The strike was Aubameyang’s fifth goal of the 2025/26 season, having rejoined Marseille in the summer following his spell with Saudi club Al Qadsiah.

Since returning to the Stade Vélodrome in 2023, he has now recorded 36 goals in 66 appearances for the club.

Marseille’s dominant showing also extended a remarkable scoring run. Les Olympiens have scored 4+ goals in ten matches in 2025, their highest tally in a single calendar year since 1991, according to Opta.

Speaking after the match at the Allianz Riviera, Aubameyang revealed the team had extra motivation going into the game.

“Before we came, the fans left us a message. When they’re not in the stands, it’s never enjoyable. We’re in the south, we treated this as a derby and came with ambition,” he said.

Despite joining football’s elite 400-goal club, the former Arsenal and Chelsea striker was quick to praise the team’s overall display, with a Champions League clash against Newcastle United looming.

“The whole team delivered a huge match. There are so many elements we can use as reference points. The ingredients were all there,” the striker added.
