Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana told he has ‘played his last game’ for Man United
Gordon Strachan believes Andre Onana will not return to the Manchester United first team, arguing that the goalkeeper lacks the qualities needed to reclaim his place.
The former United midfielder delivered a blunt assessment as the Cameroon international continues his season-long loan at Trabzonspor.
United reshaped their goalkeeping department late in the summer, with Senne Lammens arriving and quickly establishing himself as the new first choice.
That shift has placed further doubt on Onana’s long-term future, despite the club not yet confirming their plans for next season.
Strachan said he does not expect Onana to feature for the club again.
“I think Andre Onana has played his last game for Manchester United.
“At United you must have a presence in goal – whether it’s physical, attitude, or character, you have to be a presence. I don’t think he had that when he played for the club.
“A big problem for me is that I’m not sure Onana really wanted to be at Old Trafford. He looked like he’d rather be somewhere else and that might be what he needs to start enjoying his football again.
“At no point did I think he was enjoying playing football for United. I’d be shocked if I saw him play again for the club. I think his United career is over in that respect.”
Onana’s future will depend on the decisions made after his loan spell concludes, but Strachan’s comments reflect a growing sense that United may move in a different direction for the long term.
