Rochdale complete signing of Irish-Nigerian midfielder Baba Adeeko from Wigan

Rochdale have completed the signing of 23-year-old Irish-Nigerian central midfielder Baba Adeeko from Wigan.

Adeeko has signed a contract with the League Two club until 30 June 2027, having made the move on 14 August 2026. He will wear the number 17 shirt at Spotland.

The midfielder joins Rochdale after progressing through Wigan’s youth system and making the step up to the senior club in July 2023. He first entered Wigan’s academy in 2019, moving from the club’s youth set-up to the under-18 side before progressing to the under-23s in 2021.

Adeeko, who was born in Ballybane, Ireland, stands 1.75m tall and is right-footed. His preferred position is central midfield, providing Rochdale with an option in the middle of the pitch as they prepare for the 2026-27 League Two campaign.

The move represents a switch between clubs competing in different divisions of the English Football League, with Adeeko leaving Wigan in League One to join Rochdale in League Two.

His most recent recorded competitive involvement came in the EFL Cup, although he did not make an appearance during the 2026-27 competition before joining Rochdale. The transfer brings an end to his time with Wigan, where he had spent seven years across the club’s youth and senior structures.

Adeeko’s career at Wigan began with the club’s youth section during the 2019-20 season. He moved into the under-18s the following campaign and then spent two seasons with Wigan’s under-23 side before joining the first-team set-up in 2023.

Rochdale have now secured Adeeko’s arrival, with the midfielder’s new contract running through to the end of June 2027.
