2026 WCQ Playoff: Gabon coach Mouyouma praises Aubameyang’s leadership and dedication ahead of Nigeria showdown
Gabon head coach Thierry Mouyouma has showered praise on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, describing him as the greatest footballer the country has ever produced, ahead of their crucial World Cup qualifying playoff against Nigeria in Rabat on Thursday.
The 36-year-old Marseille forward, who has rediscovered his scoring touch this season, is expected to be the key figure for the Panthers as they aim to upset the Super Eagles and secure a place at the global showpiece.
In an interview with Afrik Foot, Mouyouma highlighted Aubameyang’s influence and mentality, noting that his impact extends far beyond his goals.
“Pierre-Emerick is 36, but I feel like he’s getting better with age. He’s been one of the best African players for over ten years. With the national team, it’s not just his goals that stand out, his attitude and leadership are exceptional,” he said.
Mouyouma revealed that one of his first tasks upon assuming the coaching role was persuading the veteran striker to return to international football.
The former Arsenal, Chelsea, and Barcelona forward has netted seven goals in five qualifiers, spearheading Gabon’s push for their maiden World Cup appearance.
“He’s the best player in the history of Gabonese football. He lifts the team every time he steps on the pitch,” Mouyouma added.
