French-Guinean defender Dayot Upamecano vows to make ‘right decision’ as Liverpool and Real Madrid circle for free transfer
Dayot Upamecano has pledged to make the ‘right decision’ regarding his next move, as Liverpool and Real Madrid intensify their pursuit of the Bayern Munich defender ahead of a possible free transfer next summer.
The French-Guinean centre-back, who turns 28 in October, faces a decisive moment in his career with his Bayern Munich contract set to expire at the end of the current season.
Negotiations over a renewal are ongoing, but several elite European clubs are closely watching developments, anticipating a potential opportunity to secure his services without a transfer fee.
Upamecano’s performances since joining Bayern from RB Leipzig in 2021 have established him among Europe’s most dependable defenders.
However, with no extension yet confirmed, he will be eligible to discuss a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs from January 1 if a deal remains unsigned.
Reports in France and Germany suggest that Liverpool are considering Upamecano as a long-term defensive reinforcement, while Real Madrid view him as part of their succession plan amid ongoing squad restructuring.
Both clubs are monitoring the situation discreetly but are prepared to move swiftly once the player’s contractual position becomes clearer.
Speaking to L’Équipe, Upamecano acknowledged the growing speculation but insisted he remains focused on his season objectives.
“My agent is taking care of it. We will make the right decision. I am receiving good advice,” he said.
The French international added that his current concentration lies entirely on club and national duties.
“I am focused on this season and my goals with the club and the national team. I don’t have the headspace for it.”
For Bayern, retaining Upamecano would ensure stability in defence as they pursue success under Vincent Kompany.
