TP Mazembe fan confirmed dead during derby clash with FC Saint-Éloi Lupopo at Frédéric Kibassa-Maliba Stadium
A tragic incident marred the Congolese derby between TP Mazembe and FC Saint-Éloi Lupopo after a Mazembe supporter was killed during violent clashes in the stands.
The club confirmed in a statement that one of its fans died on Sunday after being struck on the head with a machete at the Frédéric Kibassa-Maliba Stadium.
According to eyewitnesses, the chaos erupted late in the game when Lupopo overturned a one-goal deficit to lead 2–1 in the 87th minute. Jubilant home fans flooded the stands with celebrations, which quickly escalated into violence among sections of Mazembe supporters.
Scenes of unrest followed, with fans reportedly tearing out seats and hurling them onto the pitch. Several people sustained injuries, and one supporter was fatally wounded in the melee.
“TP Mazembe expresses its deep sadness following the death of one of its supporters, which occurred this Sunday, November 2nd, at the Frédéric Kibassa-Maliba Stadium.
“He was struck in the head by a machete. The victim, rushed to the stadium’s sports medicine centre, succumbed to his injuries before being transferred to the morgue at Kenya Hospital Center, pending full identification by his family and the relevant authorities.
“TPM strongly condemns this act of violence, which is contrary to the values of sport, and calls on the competent authorities to shed full light on this tragedy.”
Reports indicate that it remains uncertain whether the attack was deliberate or if the machete was thrown amid the chaos that followed Lupopo’s winning goal.
