‘It’s always great to hear from Pep Guardiola’ – Andre Onana reflects on strong start at Trabzonspor
Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana says he is enjoying life at Trabzonspor after making an instant impact since joining the Turkish club on loan.
The Cameroonian international has been pivotal in Trabzonspor’s strong start to the season, helping them climb to second in the Turkish Super Lig with 23 points.
The club has collected 13 of those points in Onana’s six appearances, during which he also registered an assist — an uncommon feat for a goalkeeper.
Onana, known for his composure and passing range, has earned widespread praise for his performances, including recognition from Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola.
The Spaniard lauded the 28-year-old’s ability to play confidently with the ball at his feet, a skill that has defined his style since his Ajax days.
Speaking to Sporx, Onana credited his teammates for making his buildup play effective.
“As I always say, most of the time, it’s my teammates who give me the options when I’m building up the game,” he said. “If they help me, the work looks much better.”
The former Inter Milan keeper also outlined the decision-making process behind his calm distribution.
“If I have to create a play, I analyse it first. Are the opponents pressing, are they pressing with their wingers, are they pressing with their strikers, or are their centre-backs coming forward?”
Onana added that he studies his opponents’ movements before deciding how to advance the ball.
“I watch how the opponents are moving and then I look at the options and make my decision.”
He expressed gratitude for Guardiola’s remarks, describing them as meaningful praise from a managerial great.
“Of course, it’s always great to hear a comment like that from Pep Guardiola. He’s one of the best managers in the history of football.”
