Angola make beach soccer history with maiden AFCON qualification after Egypt thriller
Angola have qualified for the CAF Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in their history after edging Egypt 5-4 on aggregate in a dramatic second-round qualifying tie to secure a place at next month’s finals in Senegal.
The Palancas Negras survived a late Egyptian fightback in Alexandria on Sunday, losing the second leg 2-1 but advancing thanks to their decisive 4-2 victory in the first leg in Luanda a week earlier.
The aggregate triumph completes a remarkable journey for Angola, who began their qualifying campaign in the preliminary round and overcame two opponents to reach the continental showpiece, scheduled for November 7-15.
Their achievement also puts them in contention for one of Africa’s two qualifying places at the 2027 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup.
Angola survive Egypt’s late fightback
Egypt entered the return fixture determined to overturn their two-goal deficit and draw on their experience after finishing fourth at the 2024 finals, which they hosted.
The North Africans made a promising start to their comeback attempt when Mohamed Abdel Nabi broke the deadlock in the second period, reducing the overall deficit and raising hopes of a turnaround.
The hosts continued to push for the additional goals required to turn the tie in their favour, putting Angola under sustained pressure as the contest approached its conclusion.
Hossam Paolo struck late in the third period to give Egypt a 2-1 victory on the night, leaving them just one goal short of forcing the tie further into contention.
However, Angola managed to find the net themselves, ensuring Egypt could not overturn the advantage established in the opening leg.
The visitors’ ability to withstand the pressure proved decisive, as they held on to secure a historic aggregate victory and confirm their place among the eight nations competing for the continental title.
From preliminary round to continental finals
Angola’s qualification is particularly impressive given the route they had to navigate to reach the tournament.
They began their campaign in September against Mauritius, recording a commanding 10-3 aggregate victory to advance to the second round.
The Palancas Negras established control in the opening encounter with a 4-0 win before completing the job with a 6-3 victory in the return leg.
That success earned them a meeting with Egypt, a more experienced opponent who had received an exemption from the preliminary round.
Angola rose to the challenge in the first leg in Luanda, producing an impressive attacking display to claim a 4-2 victory and establish the advantage that ultimately carried them through.
They finished the qualifying campaign with three victories and one defeat from four matches, scoring 15 goals and conceding seven.
The achievement represents a significant milestone for Angolan beach soccer, with the team now preparing for its first appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Senegal stand between Angola and continental glory
Angola will face a stern examination in Senegal, where the hosts enter the tournament as the dominant force in African beach soccer.
Senegal have won the last five editions of the competition, including the 2024 tournament in Egypt, and will be determined to extend their remarkable run on home sand.
The 2026 finals will offer Angola an opportunity to measure themselves against the continent’s strongest teams while pursuing a maiden continental crown.
Beyond the title itself, the tournament carries additional importance because the two best-performing African nations will earn qualification for the 2027 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup.
