Algeria’s group stage fixtures for 2025 Africa Cup of Nations confirmed

Algeria’s full schedule for the group stage of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations has been confirmed, setting the stage for a demanding start to Vladimir Petković’s first major tournament in charge of the national side.

Drawn in Group E alongside Burkina Faso, Equatorial Guinea and Sudan, the Algerian national team—known as the Greens—will play all three of their group matches at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat, Morocco.

The familiar setting could prove vital as they seek redemption following back-to-back early exits in the 2021 and 2023 editions of the competition.

Algeria will open their campaign on Wednesday, 24 December at 16:00 (local time) against Sudan, in what is expected to be a testing curtain-raiser despite the North Africans being strong favourites on paper.

The match will mark a crucial opportunity for Petković to assess his side’s rhythm and tactical balance before facing tougher opposition later in the group.

Four days later, on Sunday, 28 December at 18:30, Algeria will face Burkina Faso in what is widely seen as the key encounter of the group.

The Burkinabe have proven difficult opponents in recent years, frustrating Algeria on several occasions, and the clash is expected to play a decisive role in determining who tops the group.

The Greens will wrap up their first-round campaign on Wednesday, 31 December at 17:00 against Equatorial Guinea, a team with whom they share a competitive history.

The Central Africans famously defeated Algeria during the 2021 tournament in Cameroon—a result that contributed to the Greens’ shock group-stage elimination.

This final fixture will therefore carry an added layer of motivation and symbolism for Petković’s men.

The upcoming AFCON represents a critical test for Algeria, who are eager to restore their continental prestige after two disappointing campaigns.

Petković, who took charge earlier this year, has placed strong emphasis on rebuilding confidence and stability within the squad.

The coach will look to his experienced core—alongside emerging talents—to navigate a group that offers both opportunity and danger.

For supporters, the three fixtures at Rabat’s Moulay El Hassan Stadium offer a chance to witness whether this new-look Algerian team can finally rediscover the form that once made them one of Africa’s most feared sides.
