2026 WCQ: Sudan bow out after stalemate with Mauritania
Sudan’s ambitions of reaching the 2026 World Cup came to an end on Friday after a goalless draw with Mauritania in the penultimate round of CAF qualifiers at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Tanzania.
The Falcons of Jediane needed a victory to keep their faint hopes of qualification alive but failed to break down a resilient Mauritanian defence in a tight and largely uneventful contest.
Both sides struggled to impose themselves, with few genuine chances created over 90 minutes.
The result leaves Sudan third in Group B with 13 points, mathematically ending their bid to reach the tournament.
Mauritania, who sit fifth with seven points, are also eliminated from contention.
Despite showing defensive solidity throughout the campaign, Sudan’s inability to convert opportunities in key fixtures proved costly.
The stalemate in Tanzania summed up their campaign — disciplined at the back but lacking the cutting edge needed at this level.
In contrast, group leaders Senegal took a significant step towards securing their World Cup place after cruising to a commanding 5-0 victory over South Sudan.
The Lions of Teranga now sit comfortably at the top with 21 points, while DR Congo remain in pursuit on 19 points following their narrow 1-0 win against Togo.
Group B now appears all but decided, with Senegal on the verge of qualification and DR Congo poised for at least a play-off spot.
For Sudan, however, it marks the end of a campaign that offered moments of promise but ultimately fell short of delivering a historic breakthrough.
Despite their elimination, Sudan can take pride in a disciplined defensive record and improved performances compared to previous qualifying rounds.
Their resilience under pressure and organised structure were evident, yet their lack of attacking potency left them without the goals needed to challenge Africa’s elite.
As CAF officially confirmed Sudan’s exit from the qualification race, the Falcons now turn their attention to rebuilding ahead of upcoming continental competitions, hoping to build on the positives from this campaign.
