2026 WCQ: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s four-goal brilliance turns to despair in Gabon’s dramatic win over Gambia
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang delivered one of the most remarkable performances of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, scoring four times to lead Gabon to a 4-3 victory over Gambia on Friday — only to see his night end in frustration with a late red card.
The Olympique de Marseille striker almost single-handedly kept Gabon’s World Cup hopes alive, but his dismissal means he will miss the decisive final qualifier, leaving his nation to battle for their fate without their talisman.
Under pressure to close the gap on Group F leaders Ivory Coast, Gabon travelled to Nairobi — where Gambia have been forced to host their home games — knowing only victory would keep them in contention.
Yet, the opening stages were a nightmare for Thierry Mouyouma’s side, whose defensive errors gifted Gambia a 3-2 lead shortly after the break.
Yankuba Minteh opened the scoring in the 23rd minute before Adama Sidibeh struck twice, once in first-half stoppage time and again two minutes into the second half, to leave the Panthers on the brink.
But when his country needed him most, Aubameyang responded with vintage ruthlessness.
Having already put Gabon ahead twice in the first half with goals in the 20th and 42nd minutes, he completed his hat-trick with a composed equaliser in the 62nd minute, then fired home the winner from close range 16 minutes later to seal a remarkable comeback.
However, the euphoria quickly turned to dismay.
Aubameyang, booked for an overzealous celebration in which he smashed a corner flag after scoring his fourth goal, let his emotions get the better of him once more.
A brief altercation with an opposing player saw him push his rival, prompting the referee to brandish a second yellow card and send him off in the 85th minute.
His dismissal casts a shadow over Gabon’s victory and leaves Mouyouma facing a major selection headache ahead of Tuesday’s final qualifier at home to Burundi.
The Panthers trail Ivory Coast — who demolished Seychelles 7-0 — by a single point.
To top the group and qualify directly, Gabon must win and hope the Elephants falter against Kenya.
Even if that scenario fails to materialise, Gabon remain firmly in contention for a play-off place.
Yet for now, their triumph in Nairobi will be remembered as much for Aubameyang’s extraordinary scoring display as for the red card that may yet define Gabon’s World Cup destiny.
