Patrice Motsepe reaffirmed that Morocco will host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as planned, dismissing recent speculation over a possible relocation.
With less than three months before the tournament begins, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) president aimed to eliminate all uncertainty surrounding the host nation.
Speaking during the 47th CAF General Assembly in Kinshasa, Motsepe addressed weeks of mounting rumours about potential changes to the tournament’s venue.
“Morocco is our plan A, our plan B, and our plan C,” said the South African football chief, stressing CAF’s unwavering commitment to staging the event in the North African country.
His remarks followed a series of reports from Algerian media outlets suggesting that CAF had concerns about Morocco’s readiness.
These reports hinted at the possibility of identifying an alternative host should preparations fall behind schedule.
Motsepe dismissed such claims outright and expressed full confidence in Morocco’s ability to deliver a world-class tournament.
The CAF president emphasised that Morocco’s track record in hosting major football events proves its capability.
He insisted that the country’s infrastructure, planning, and experience place it among Africa’s most reliable hosts.
“We have no doubts about Morocco’s readiness. They continue to demonstrate excellence in organisation and commitment to African football,” he said.
Motsepe’s statement aims to reassure national associations, sponsors, and fans that the tournament’s planning remains firmly on course.
His comments also reflect CAF’s determination to avoid uncertainty that could disrupt preparations or affect participation.
The speculation over Morocco’s status intensified after delays in some infrastructure projects prompted questions about the country’s readiness.
Critics argued that CAF should develop contingency plans in case the facilities were not completed in time.
However, Motsepe made clear that such discussions were unnecessary, reiterating that CAF would not consider alternative hosts.
Morocco’s government and football authorities have continued to invest heavily in stadium upgrades, transportation networks, and accommodation facilities ahead of the tournament.
Their efforts aim to ensure that AFCON 2025 meets international standards and showcases African football on a global stage.
CAF officials have maintained close communication with Moroccan organisers throughout the preparation process.
They have expressed satisfaction with the progress made and remain optimistic that all deadlines will be met before the tournament begins.
The AFCON remains Africa’s premier football competition, attracting global attention and significant economic impact for the host country.
For Morocco, hosting the event provides an opportunity to strengthen its reputation as a leading football destination and reinforce its commitment to the sport’s development across the continent.
Motsepe’s firm stance also signals CAF’s intent to stand by its decisions and avoid the controversies that sometimes overshadow major tournaments.
By backing Morocco unequivocally, the organisation aims to project unity, confidence, and stability ahead of Africa’s most prestigious football event.
The 2025 edition of the AFCON promises to deliver exciting competition, intense rivalries, and a celebration of African football talent.
With Motsepe’s assurance now clear, attention will shift from speculation to anticipation as teams, fans, and organisers count down to kick-off.
