Nigerian defender Felix Agu faces months out after ligament injury in Werder Bremen win

Werder Bremen have announced that Nigerian full-back Felix Agu will be out of action for an extended period after suffering a syndesmosis ligament injury during their 1-0 Bundesliga victory over FC St. Pauli.

The diagnosis was confirmed on Monday following MRI and X-ray scans carried out by the club’s medical team, led by Dr. Robert Gorzolla.

Agu, 26, has been one of Bremen’s most consistent performers this season, operating effectively down the right flank and offering both defensive solidity and attacking support.

His injury represents a significant blow to the team, coming just as he was rediscovering top form after returning from a previous layoff.

Head coach Horst Steffen expressed sympathy for the player, acknowledging the setback but promising full support during his recovery.

“I’m incredibly sorry for Felix. We will do everything we can to get him fit again as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, however, we have to assume that Felix will be out of action for the foreseeable future,” Steffen said.

The injury also disrupts Agu’s growing international prospects. The former Germany U21 defender had been called up by Nigeria for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin but will now miss out.

His absence compounds Nigeria’s injury concerns, with Bright Osayi-Samuel of Birmingham City and Cyriel Dessers of Panathinaikos also ruled out.

Agu had been on the verge of making his competitive debut for the Super Eagles during the September window, an appearance that would have officially tied him to Nigeria.

Instead, his focus will shift to rehabilitation under the supervision of Bremen’s medical staff.

The club hopes to guide the defender through a successful recovery process to ensure his timely return to full fitness.

His comeback will be vital for both Bremen’s defensive setup and Nigeria’s plans ahead of next year’s international fixtures.
