‘Simply fantastic’ - Bayern chief Eberl hails Belgian-Congolese coach Vincent Kompany’s stunning impact

Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl has hailed head coach Vincent Kompany for transforming the club’s fortunes, describing his impact as ‘simply fantastic’.

The Belgian-Congolese tactician has been instrumental in Bayern’s revival since taking charge in May 2024.

His appointment came at a turbulent time for the German champions, who had just endured a trophyless season and finished third in the Bundesliga.

But under Kompany’s leadership, Bayern have rediscovered their dominance and identity, culminating in a league title triumph in his first full campaign.

Eberl told Sky Deutschland: “We were unsuccessful the season before, without a title, and only finished third in the Bundesliga.

“Then he came in and revitalised this team to some extent with his intensity, his desire, his energy, and his joy.

“Players who had previously been pigeonholed came out again, are healthy, and can perform to their potential. That’s how something happened last season.

“Vincent Kompany — despite his experience in the Premier League and having played at the top level — is coming to such a big club like Bayern Munich with everything that goes with it, including off the pitch. And the way he’s handling it is simply fantastic.”

Kompany’s arrival initially raised eyebrows given his limited top-flight experience, particularly after Burnley’s relegation from the Premier League in 2024.

Yet he silenced critics with a blistering start, guiding Bayern to four straight Bundesliga victories and setting a Champions League record with a 9–2 demolition of Dinamo Zagreb.

He also became the first Bayern coach since Pep Guardiola in 2015–16 to win his opening three away league games.

Bayern went on to make history as the first club across Europe’s top five leagues to record 10 consecutive wins at the start of a season — a testament to Kompany’s tactical discipline and infectious leadership.
