‘He kept my spirits high’ – English-Nigerian Bukayo Saka explains how his puppy helped him through injury hell
Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka has revealed that his new puppy played a crucial role in helping him cope during his recent spell on the sidelines, describing the pet as a source of joy through what he called “injury hell.”
Saka, who is of Nigerian heritage but represents England at international level, was ruled out for weeks after sustaining a hamstring injury in August against Leeds United.
His absence saw Arsenal struggle at times, including defeats to Liverpool, while England had to do without him in World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia.
Now fully fit, the 24-year-old has returned to Mikel Arteta’s starting XI, regaining his sharpness and contributing goals in the Champions League.
Speaking about his recovery, Saka highlighted how his new companion lifted his spirits when the days felt longest.
“I spent a lot of time with my family, with myself. I got a puppy as well, so he helped me keep my spirits high – he kept me busy as well. It was hard work at the start,” Saka said.
The England forward admitted that the daily routine of caring for the dog gave him a welcome distraction from the frustrations of rehabilitation.
His time off the pitch coincided with intensive physiotherapy, but having the puppy, he explained, provided balance between recovery and personal life.
His return to action has been timely. With Noni Madueke still sidelined, Arteta has leaned on Saka’s creativity and energy, while England manager Thomas Tuchel recalled him for the recent international break.
The winger scored against Olympiacos in the Champions League midweek and is expected to feature in England’s friendly against Wales at Wembley before a World Cup qualifier against Latvia on October 14.
For Saka, the episode reinforced how the smallest comforts, even a puppy, can play a vital role in sustaining elite athletes through the physical and emotional challenges of injury.
