Franco-Cameroonian forward Hugo Ekitike faces fine at Liverpool over red card incident
France international of Cameroonian descent Hugo Ekitike is facing a potential fine at Liverpool his red card incident in the EFL Cup clash Southampton.
Ekitike, who joined the Premier League giants in the summer made substitute appearances as his side cruised to a 2-1 win over Southampton last Tuesday in the third round of the Cup competition.
The former Frankfurt star scored the winning goal in the 85th minute after replacing Swedish-Eritrean striker Alexander Isak at Anfield.
Ekitike was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for taking off his shirt during the celebration, having previously received it for dissent at the referee.
According to reports, the forward will not only be suspended, but also faces a financial penalty for receiving the marching orders.
Ekitike had a serious conversation in the dressing room after the clash, with both Arne Slot and Jeremie Frimpong expressing their frustration in a post-match debrief, while the rest of the squad agreed Ekitike’s actions were reckless.
The forward, who joined from Eintracht Frankfurt this summer, will miss the sides clash against Crystal Palace in the next round of the competition.
Ekitike started for Liverpool at the start of the season, but his position was threatened by the arrival of Isak in a record deal from Newcastle United.
