Nigerian midfielder Raphael Onyedika sustains injury in Club Brugge’s pulsating 5-5 draw against Westerlo
Nigerian international Raphael Onyedika has suffered an injury ahead of the October international break.
The midfielder sustained the injury on Wednesday night when he featured in Club Brugge’s 5-5 draw against Westerlo in the Belgian Pro League.
Onyedika started in midfield alongside Belgian youngster Lynnt Audoor but was forced off after just 16 minutes, making way for Alexander Stankovic. His early exit overshadowed what turned into a rollercoaster contest at the Jan Breydel Stadium.
Westerlo stunned the hosts with an early strike from Josimar Alcocer before Nacho Ferri doubled their lead on the stroke of halftime. Brugge, however, responded immediately, as Nicolo Tresoldi pulled one back just before the interval.
The second half brought even more drama. Carlos Forbs equalised before Joaquin Seys completed the turnaround to make it 3-2 for Brugge. But Ferri’s second of the night and Isa Sakamoto’s finish put Westerlo back in front, only for Tresoldi to level again with his brace.
A late own goal from Emin Bayram looked set to seal victory for Brugge, but the defender redeemed himself deep into stoppage time with a dramatic equaliser, ending the clash in a breathtaking 5-5 draw.
The injury to Onyedika comes as a concern ahead of the October international break. More information on the extent of the injury will come out in the next 48 hours.
