Congolese forward Emmanuel Matuta scores first goal as Lierse defeat Molenbeek
Emmanuel Matuta marked only his second appearance for Lierse with his first goal for the club, helping secure a 2-0 victory over Molenbeek in Belgian Division 2.
The Congolese forward, who joined after a spell at Dutch side Groningen, struck in the 63rd minute to double Lierse’s lead in a match played as part of the sixth round of fixtures.
His finish provided a crucial cushion for the side, sealing their second win of the campaign.
Matuta was joined on the pitch by his compatriot Noam Mayoka, with both Congolese players playing their part in an encounter that was closely contested until Lierse’s clinical finishing proved decisive.
For Matuta, the evening was particularly memorable, as his performance earned him the “Man of the Match” award, a recognition of both his goal and his overall contribution across the pitch.
The match began with intensity, with Molenbeek eager to impose themselves and frustrate the visitors. Lierse, however, grew into the game and took the lead before half-time, setting the stage for a more confident second half.
When Matuta’s opportunity arrived shortly after the hour mark, he converted with composure, ensuring his side could control the final stages without undue pressure.
For the young forward, the strike comes as an early statement of intent in his new colours. To find the net so quickly after arriving at the club has provided both the player and his team with renewed confidence.
His goal was not only a decisive moment in the match but also a signal that he could be a key figure in Lierse’s bid to climb the standings.
Lierse’s coaching staff were visibly encouraged by the performance. Securing a second victory of the season has lifted the side to 10th place in the table with six points, but the challenge now is to build consistency.
The win will undoubtedly provide a mental boost, but the staff remain cautious, stressing the importance of maintaining focus and discipline in the matches ahead.
For Molenbeek, the defeat was a setback in what had been shaping up to be a competitive campaign. Despite their efforts, they were undone by a Lierse side that capitalised on its chances and defended resolutely once ahead.
The inability to respond after Matuta’s strike left them frustrated, with little time to recover momentum in the latter stages.
Attention now turns to the next round, where Lierse will face the reserve side of Genk on Thursday, 25 September. That fixture presents another opportunity for the club to continue their upward push in the standings and test the growing confidence within the squad.
For Matuta, it will also be another chance to build on his encouraging start and further integrate into the team’s attacking system.
The victory over Molenbeek may not change Lierse’s ambitions overnight, but it represents progress at a vital stage of the season.
With players like Matuta and Mayoka stepping up, the club has reason to believe it can push beyond early struggles and shape a more positive campaign.
For now, the story belongs to Matuta — two matches, one goal, and already a decisive presence for his new club.
