Cameroonian attacker Bryan Mbeumo climbed off the bench to score for Manchester United on Wednesday night, as the team lost to lower-division side Grimsby in the EFL Cup.
United’s struggles under Ruben Amorim continued as they crashed out in the second round of the competition, losing on penalties after a dramatic 2-2 draw in regulation time.
The result adds to the mounting pressure on the Portuguese coach, with fans left stunned by the manner of the defeat to a team competing in the fourth tier of English football.
Grimsby silenced the visiting fans early with two quick goals, as Charles Vernam struck in the 22nd minute before Tyrell Warren doubled the lead eight minutes later.
United eventually rallied late in the second half, with Mbeumo pulling one back in the 75th minute before Harry Maguire grabbed an equaliser in the 89th minute to send the tie into a shootout.
The penalty drama stretched to sudden death, with Grimsby edging it 12-11. Manchester United had a golden chance to seal the win, but Matheus Cunha’s effort was denied by goalkeeper Christy Pym, who turned hero for the underdogs.
The defeat marks one of United’s most surprising cup exits in recent years and deepens the scrutiny surrounding Amorim’s tenure.
