Bachir Belloumi shines on Hull City debut as Algeria’s right-wing race opens up

Bachir Belloumi made an immediate impression on his Premier League debut for Hull City, producing an influential display in Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Manchester United and strengthening his case for a return to the Algeria squad.

The match marked Hull City’s return to England’s top flight and Belloumi’s first appearance in the Premier League. Although the 24-year-old did not score or provide an assist, his performance was one of the main talking points from a result that saw Manchester United beaten 2-0.

Belloumi was a constant threat to the Red Devils, particularly when operating on the right, his preferred position. He also moved across the pitch, appearing through the middle and on the left, and repeatedly caused problems with his movement and attacking intent.

The Algeria international hopeful started the match and remained on the pitch for the full 90 minutes. He completed six of the eight passes he attempted in Manchester United’s half, won possession back three times, registered two shots and made one interception.

His performance was watched by his father, Lakhdar Belloumi, who was present for the occasion.

The display could help Belloumi revive his international career. He has not been called up by Algeria since October 2023, when he received the only selection of his career so far but did not play under then-manager Djamel Belmadi.

A consistent run of performances for Hull City could put the former MC Oran player back into contention and give him the opportunity to establish himself on Algeria’s right wing.

However, Belloumi faces competition from Anis Hadj Moussa, who is regarded as the natural favourite to eventually take over from Riyad Mahrez. Mahrez officially retired from international football on 3 June, leaving a significant position to be filled in the Algeria team.

Hadj Moussa’s status is not yet completely secure. His inconsistent performances at the 2026 World Cup have prevented him from being definitively established as Mahrez’s successor, leaving room for other candidates to challenge for the role.

Belloumi’s display against Manchester United therefore offers an early indication that the position may not be settled. His ability to threaten from the right, contribute in other attacking areas and remain effective throughout the match gives him a platform from which to push his claims.

For now, he must maintain that level with Hull City before a return to the national team becomes a realistic prospect. But after a first Premier League appearance in which he unsettled Manchester United and contributed to a major victory, Belloumi has made himself a player to watch in Algeria’s developing succession battle.
