Al Ahly have finally brought an end to the long-running sponsorship rights dispute involving midfielder Emam Ashour. The club confirmed that the matter is now settled after receiving an official notification from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) regarding the outstanding dues.
Ashour joined Al Ahly two years ago from Danish side Midtjylland in a $3 million deal. Soon after, his former youth club Ghazl El Mahalla lodged a complaint to CAS demanding their share of sponsorship rights.
An official source at the club explained to Kooora that the court approved the rights of three Egyptian teams: Ghazl El Mahalla, Zamalek, and Haras El Hodoud. Ashour began his career with Mahalla before a loan spell at Haras El Hodoud and later a permanent move to Zamalek.
The court ruled that Al Ahly must pay $120,000 in total. Of that amount, Mahalla will receive $96,000, Zamalek $16,000, and Haras El Hodoud $8,000.
The source added that the board has already deposited the equivalent of 6 million Egyptian pounds, confirming to the Egyptian Football Association that payments will be made locally in pounds.
