Eric Bailly’s proposed move to Iranian giants Persepolis FC has broken down after the Ivorian defender’s financial demands proved too high for the club, despite their strong interest in securing his services.

Currently a free agent following the expiration of his contract with Villarreal on June 30, 2025, the 31-year-old has struggled to finalise a deal with a new club, despite interest from multiple sides during the summer transfer window.

After the collapse of a potential move to Saudi Arabian side Al Najmah SC, Bailly entered into talks with Persepolis, one of Iran’s most successful clubs. However, those negotiations were brought to a halt due to what sources describe as excessive salary expectations on the part of the player.

The experienced centre-back is reportedly demanding an annual salary of $2.5 million, equivalent to approximately €2.15 million — a figure Persepolis were unwilling to meet.

The club has now opted to withdraw from the deal entirely, ending weeks of speculation about the potential arrival of the former Manchester United and Villarreal defender.

Despite the breakdown, the transfer saga is far from over. Bailly’s status as a free agent continues to attract interest from clubs across various leagues, and the door remains open for a deal elsewhere.

His 49 international caps for Côte d’Ivoire, combined with his extensive experience in top-tier European football, ensure he remains a valuable option for teams seeking defensive reinforcements.

At 31, Bailly brings a wealth of experience from stints in England, Spain, and France. He made his name with Villarreal before moving to Manchester United in 2016, where he spent several seasons and won the UEFA Europa League.

He later returned to Spain and also featured for Olympique de Marseille on loan, offering versatility, strength, and composure in defence.

While his on-pitch profile remains appealing, financial considerations are proving to be a recurring stumbling block. Clubs interested in acquiring his services will need to weigh his experience and leadership qualities against the significant cost of his wage demands.

Persepolis, who had hoped to add Bailly’s international pedigree to their backline ahead of a new season, will now shift focus to alternative targets.

For Bailly, the search for a new club continues, with his next move likely to depend on whether interested sides are willing — or able — to meet his salary expectations.

As the summer transfer window progresses, all eyes remain on the Ivorian international to see where he lands next. Whether in Asia, Europe, or the Middle East, Eric Bailly’s next destination will likely be shaped by a club’s ability to balance ambition with financial pragmatism.
