The National Professional Football League of Morocco has signed a landmark agreement with Spain’s La Liga, aimed at accelerating the growth and long-term development of Moroccan football.
The signing ceremony took place in Salé, with Abdel Salam Belqchour, President of Morocco’s National League, and Javier Tebas, President of La Liga, formalising the partnership in the presence of Royal Moroccan Football Federation chief Fouzi Lekjaa and Spanish Ambassador to Morocco, Enrique Ojeda Villa.
Belqchour described the agreement as a vital component of the growing strategic alliance between Morocco and Spain, particularly in light of their shared commitment to co-hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Portugal.
“This agreement is part of the strategic rapprochement between Morocco and Spain, notably through the joint organization of the 2030 World Cup with Portugal,” Belqchour stated. “It will strengthen relations in the field of football and will offer an opportunity to Moroccan clubs to draw inspiration from the experiences of their Spanish counterparts.”
He further underlined the comprehensive scope of the partnership, calling it “an important step that will strengthen the commitment to the national football system in both countries.” Belqchour emphasised the importance of conducting a full analysis of Morocco’s football structure, with the goal of maximising the benefits of this new collaboration.
Javier Tebas, representing one of Europe’s most prestigious football leagues, welcomed the agreement and the opportunity it provides for both sides.
“We came to sign this agreement with the aim of participation and change,” said Tebas. “This signing is just the beginning of a fruitful and successful collaboration.”
Tebas also noted that La Liga’s aim is to share its experience and professional standards with Moroccan football stakeholders.
“The objective is to allow the Moroccan football system to have a glimpse of the experience of the Spanish League, one of the most professional leagues in the world,” he added.
He confirmed that a preliminary study had already been carried out, identifying both the strengths of Moroccan football and the areas in need of improvement.
This agreement marks a significant milestone in the broader efforts to modernise and internationalise Moroccan football.
By tapping into La Liga’s expertise and operational frameworks, Moroccan football leaders hope to build a more competitive, structured, and globally integrated system in the years leading up to the 2030 World Cup.
