Senegal: Guédiawaye FC and AS Pikine share the spoils in intense derby behind closed doors
Guédiawaye FC and AS Pikine were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw in their much-anticipated Ligue 1 derby on Wednesday, played without fans at the Lat Dior Stadium in Thiès due to a prefectural security directive.
Originally slated for the Léopold Sédar Senghor Stadium, the high-stakes suburban clash was relocated and held behind closed doors — yet the intensity on the pitch never wavered.
Despite the lack of the usual electric atmosphere from the stands, both sides delivered a gritty and fiercely contested match, reflective of the fierce rivalry between the two clubs.
Guédiawaye FC appeared on course for a hard-fought victory after Makhmouth Diallo broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute.
The goal came under difficult circumstances, with Guédiawaye reduced to 10 men following Mamadou Diouf’s red card in the 42nd minute.
Down a player, they were forced to defend aggressively to maintain their slender lead.
However, AS Pikine refused to yield. Deep into stoppage time, Ibrahima K. Guèye found the equaliser, pouncing on a late opportunity to rescue a point for his side.
The dramatic finish underscored Pikine’s determination and left Guédiawaye ruing a missed opportunity to take all three points.
The draw sees AS Pikine remain in sixth place with 37 points and a goal difference of +2, while Guédiawaye FC sit in ninth on 33 points, carrying a goal difference of -3.
The result does little to alter the mid-table picture but keeps both clubs in contention for a strong finish to the season.
At the top of the standings, Union Sportive de Gorée reclaimed the lead in the title race following a crucial 1-0 victory over Teungueth FC.
Their narrow win sees them climb to 47 points, leapfrogging Jaraaf, who fell 1-0 to Casa Sports in Ziguinchor and now sit three points adrift in second.
