Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann is set to leave Jamal Musiala out of his squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League finals, with the Bayern Munich midfielder still recovering from injury.
The decision comes ahead of Thursday’s squad announcement, which will be made via a video message, as reported by kicker.
Musiala, who is of Nigerian descent, has been out of action since April due to a muscle tear in his thigh.
While he has recently returned to ball training, national team staff have opted against including him in the squad, focusing instead on his full recovery.
Nagelsmann’s decision follows a request from Bayern sporting director Max Eberl to avoid rushing the 22-year-old back into competitive action.
The plan is to allow Musiala to complete his rehabilitation without the pressure of tournament football, with an eye on having him fit for the FIFA Club World Cup later this year.
His absence will be one of several from the national team as they prepare for the semi-final against Portugal on June 4 in Herzogenaurach.
Musiala’s omission reflects Germany’s longer-term focus on player welfare and availability for future competitions.
Though the attacking midfielder has emerged as a key figure for both club and country in recent seasons, Nagelsmann appears determined not to compromise his fitness by bringing him back too soon.
In addition to Musiala, other high-profile names such as Antonio Rüdiger, Kai Havertz, and Marc-André ter Stegen are also likely to miss the tournament due to injury or ongoing recovery.
The reshuffled squad is expected to lean on younger or in-form replacements as Germany aims to progress in the final four of the Nations League.
