Senegal’s Assane Diao named Serie A Player of the Weekend after brace for Como

Senegal’s Assane Diao Named Serie A Player of the Weekend after brace for Como

Assane Diao delivered a standout performance in Como’s emphatic 3-0 win over Lecce, earning the highest rating of any player in Serie A over the weekend.

The Senegal international struck twice to help secure the victory, continuing a brilliant individual campaign under head coach Cesc Fabregas.

Diao’s brace was instrumental in extending Como’s winning streak to three consecutive league matches—an achievement the club had not managed since 1952.

Diao, who has now netted eight goals in 15 Serie A appearances this season, leads his team in the scoring charts.

The 21-year-old’s consistent impact in front of goal has seen him voted Man of the Match on five separate occasions, further underlining his growing influence in Italian football.

His latest display was met with widespread acclaim, as he earned a near-perfect performance rating of 8.9 out of 10—making him the highest-rated player in Italy’s top flight for the round.

His performance included clinical finishing, intelligent movement, and an ability to lead the line with composure and purpose.

Como’s recent form, bolstered by Diao’s contributions, has revitalised their campaign. The three-match winning run marks a significant milestone in the club’s history, bringing renewed optimism to supporters and signaling the potential for a strong finish to the season.

Diao’s rise has been one of the stories of the Serie A season. The Senegalese forward has not only demonstrated an eye for goal, but also a willingness to shoulder responsibility in key moments.

Under Fabregas, he has flourished in a system that emphasizes attacking freedom and sharp transitions—qualities that have suited the forward’s pace, technical ability, and instinct inside the box.

The win over Lecce was comfortable from start to finish, and Diao’s early opener settled any nerves within the Como camp.

His second goal, a precise finish following a swift counter-attack, effectively sealed the outcome before the hour mark.

The team’s third goal added gloss to an already dominant display.

Fabregas, speaking after the match, praised Diao’s development this season and highlighted the attacker’s growing maturity on and off the pitch.

The former Spain international has overseen a notable transformation in Como’s style of play since taking charge, with Diao emerging as a central figure in his plans.

For the Senegal national team, Diao’s form at club level is also encouraging. His consistent goal-scoring and match-winning displays make a compelling case for a regular starting role on the international stage.

With several matches remaining in the Serie A calendar, Diao will look to maintain his momentum and further enhance his reputation in one of Europe’s most competitive leagues.

Como, meanwhile, will hope his form continues to propel them up the table as they aim to finish the campaign strongly.

Diao’s performances have not only lit up Como’s season but have also firmly established him as one of the league’s brightest young attacking talents.
