Senegal unveils first-ever national U17 football championship
Senegal is set to launch its inaugural Under-17 National Championship, marking a significant step in the country’s ongoing efforts to elevate youth football.
The competition, scheduled to kick off before the end of April 2025, will run until July and aims to unearth and promote young talent from across the nation.
The initiative follows the success of the League Cup introduced for the U20 age category and reflects a broader push by Senegalese football authorities to deepen development pathways at all youth levels.
According to wiwsport, the new U17 tournament will bring together clubs from all over Senegal, grouped into eight major regional hubs.
These include Dakar; Thiès; Fatick and Kaolack; Louga and Saint-Louis; Diourbel and Matam; Ziguinchor, Kolda and Sédhiou; and finally, Kaffrine, Kédougou, and Tambacounda. Within each zone, clubs will engage in home-and-away fixtures during the first phase of the competition.
Upon the conclusion of the regional phase, each zone will put forward a selection of its standout players to form a regional representative team.
These eight regional selections will then converge for a grand final tournament, with this year’s event potentially being staged in Sédhiou.
The final phase will not be limited to the U17 category alone.
It will also serve as a showcase for the country’s U15 talent pool.
Teams from both age groups will compete in a group stage format, followed by knockout rounds, culminating in the semi-finals and the final match to determine the national champions.
While silverware will be on the line, the tournament’s broader objective lies in talent identification.
The championship provides an important scouting platform for national team coaches and technical staff from the U15 and U17 levels, who will travel across the regions to observe and evaluate emerging prospects.
In fostering structured competition and regional inclusion, the championship is seen as a vital tool to not only raise performance standards but also to ensure no corner of Senegal is left untouched in the search for the next generation of football stars.
The Senegalese Football Federation views the championship as a crucial investment in the country’s footballing future, with hopes that it will enhance youth development and ultimately strengthen the national teams for years to come.
