Egypt forward Mostafa “Zico” Mohamed has blamed what he described as unfair refereeing for the Pharaohs’ dramatic 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Egyptian attacker was one of his side’s standout performers against the defending champions, scoring twice during a thrilling contest. However, one of his goals was ruled out following a VAR review, a decision that proved pivotal as Argentina fought back from two goals down to book their place in the quarter-finals.

Egypt looked on course for one of the biggest upsets of the tournament after taking a commanding lead, but late goals from Cristian Romero, Lionel Messi and Enzo Fernandez completed a remarkable comeback for the reigning world champions.

Zico questions officiating after World Cup exit

Speaking after the match, Zico expressed his frustration with the officiating, insisting the referee’s decisions had denied Egypt a famous victory and a place in the last eight.

“The referee is unfair, God is sufficient for me and the best disposer of affairs. He’s wasting the effort of an entire nation. The cup is being given to Argentina. They win the World Cup,” Zico shared.

The forward’s comments came after his first second-half goal was disallowed by referee Francois Letexier following a VAR review, with the official ruling that there had been a foul during the build-up to the attack.

Disallowed goal remains major talking point

The decision to overturn Zico’s goal has continued to generate debate following Egypt’s elimination.

The incident has attracted widespread discussion on social media and across mainstream media, with many analysts weighing in on the VAR intervention and the referee’s overall performance during the match.

Despite the disappointment of their Round of 16 exit, Egypt produced one of their strongest World Cup performances, pushing the defending champions to the limit before eventually falling short in a dramatic contest.
