Nottingham Forest winger Callum Hudson-Odoi has set his sights on a return to the England national team following an impressive run of form this season.
The former Chelsea star made his senior England debut under Gareth Southgate in a 5-0 victory over the Czech Republic during a Euro 2020 qualifier.
At just 18 years old, he became the youngest player to represent England in a competitive international match, earning a total of three caps.
However, injuries hampered his progress, keeping him out of contention for the national team in recent years.
This season, Hudson-Odoi, who is of a Ghanaian heritage has been in fine form, contributing five goals and two assists for Forest.
His performances sparked speculation about a possible recall to England under new manager Thomas Tuchel, but he ultimately missed out on the final squad selection.
Reflecting on his journey, he told BBC Sport: “I had been playing games week in, week out, got my first call-up for England and I step off and boom, everything collapses. It was tough, it was very tough.
He admitted that injuries raised doubts about his future: “At the time, I was just thinking, am I going to be the same player I was? Will I be able to sprint or kick a ball again?”
Discussing his time under Tuchel at Chelsea, Hudson-Odoi acknowledged their differences but praised the German manager’s influence:
“We had our differences at times, and that is normal. Every player and coach has their differences.
“Like [when Tuchel had me] playing wing-back, and I am like, why am I here?
“But it was to benefit the team, and it benefits myself, helping me work on my defensive game.
“It’s good that we had that moment and we have talked about it. He is an amazing manager and he knows how to get the best out of players.
Despite missing out on the latest squad, Hudson-Odoi remains hopeful about representing England again: “If the possibility and chance [for England] comes – I will have to go there and prove myself all over again.
“I just control what I can control. It’s about enjoying my football once again, smiling and being positive.”
Hudson-Odoi previously played under Tuchel at Chelsea, where he lifted the Champions League trophy after defeating Manchester City in the 2021 final.
