Monnapule Saleng, a standout performer for Orlando Pirates, has been at the center of salary discussions within South African football. Recent reports indicate that Saleng earns approximately R70,000 per month (about $3,700).
For a player who has scored 25 goals for the club since 2023 and won individual accolades, the number has been described as “unfair” by his family and friends.
The salary saga came to light after reports emerged that some of Saleng’s teammates earn up to R500,000 per month (approximately $27,000). The stark contrast in wages led to growing dissatisfaction from the player, who allegedly felt his efforts were not being matched financially.
AfricaSoccer.com has also seen growing frustration among supporters, many of whom believe Saleng deserves a salary that reflects his contribution to the team.
His childhood friend, Boikanyo Maine, and his mother, Makie Tsoeu, have publicly voiced their disappointment in Pirates for not “paying him what he deserves.”

This dispute over earnings reportedly triggered a breakdown in communication between Saleng and the club. After boycotting training sessions, he has not featured in any match since December 2024.
Although Pirates have denied any formal offers for Saleng from abroad, the player is believed to be preparing a transfer request at the end of the season.
As things stand, unless his wage structure is renegotiated, it appears unlikely that Saleng will stay at the club long-term.
