The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is holding its 14th Extraordinary General Assembly today in Cairo, with leaders from all 54 member associations, zonal unions, and international football representatives in attendance.
The meeting, chaired by CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe, will address key developments and future plans for African football.
A major highlight of the assembly is Algeria’s return to the CAF Executive Bureau after an absence since 2017. Walid Sadi, the president of the Algerian Football Federation (FAF), is set to take a seat on the bureau after Tunisian candidate Hussein Jenayeh withdrew, leaving Sadi as the sole representative from North Africa.
Algeria’s return comes amid ongoing political and legal battles, including a recent victory in a dispute over geographical representation involving Morocco’s RS Berkane.
Alongside the assembly, CAF will also conduct elections for its leadership. Patrice Motsepe is expected to be re-elected as CAF President unopposed.
Additionally, new members of the FIFA Executive Bureau representing Africa will be selected, shaping the continent’s influence in global football.
A major point of intrigue is the emergence of Cameroonian football legend Samuel Eto’o as a contender for the position of CAF’s first vice-president. Eto’o, recently cleared of allegations by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), is challenging Moroccan Football Federation President Fouzi Lekjaa’s faction.
Mauritanian football official Ahmed Yahia is also playing a key role in the behind-the-scenes negotiations.
The assembly will conclude with an official press conference led by Dr. Motsepe, where the outcomes of the discussions and elections will be announced.
