Alex Iwobi’s precise assist for Raul Jimenez was a standout moment in Fulham’s 2-1 loss to Brighton, earning praise from former Rangers striker Kris Boyd.
The Nigerian midfielder’s well-executed delivery set up his teammate for a fine goal, but it was not enough to prevent Fulham from suffering defeat at Craven Cottage.
Iwobi’s moment of brilliance
In the 35th minute, Iwobi showcased his creativity and determination with an incisive run down the right flank.
Beating his marker, he delivered an inch-perfect cross into the penalty area, where Jimenez expertly controlled the ball on his chest before firing a left-footed shot past Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.
The goal brought Fulham level after Brighton had dominated much of the early play.
However, Fulham’s joy was short-lived, as Brighton restored their lead just five minutes later.
Dutch defender Jan Paul van Hecke, left unmarked at the far post, headed home a Yasin Ayari free-kick for his first goal for the Seagulls.
Joao Pedro secures Brighton’s victory
Brighton continued to apply pressure in the second half and eventually found the winning goal through Joao Pedro.
The Brazilian forward capitalised on a defensive lapse to slot the ball past Bernd Leno, securing all three points for Roberto De Zerbi’s side.
The victory strengthened Brighton’s push for European qualification, while Fulham remained mid-table, struggling for consistency.
Kris Boyd’s verdict on Iwobi’s assist
Speaking on Sky Sports, Boyd lauded Iwobi’s contribution but highlighted Jimenez’s clinical finish as the defining moment of the goal.
It’s a top-class finish. Iwobi’s ball is good, but the finish is even better,” Boyd stated. “He controls the ball brilliantly on his chest before sending a left-footed shot into the back of the net.”
Despite the defeat, Iwobi’s performance was a bright spot for Fulham, reinforcing his importance in Marco Silva’s side.
Since joining from Everton in the summer of 2023, the Nigerian international has been instrumental in Fulham’s attacking play, providing creativity and energy in midfield.
Fulham’s next challenge
With the Premier League season entering its decisive phase, Fulham will be aiming to bounce back in their next fixture.
Meanwhile, Brighton’s win keeps them in contention for a European spot, continuing their impressive campaign under De Zerbi.
For Iwobi, the focus will be on maintaining his strong form as Fulham look to end the season on a positive note.
His latest performance, capped by an elegant assist, serves as further evidence of his growing influence in the English top flight.
