Sevilla target Abdel Abqar as contract talks stall at Alavés

Sevilla FC have expressed strong interest in Deportivo Alavés defender Abdel Abqar, as uncertainty surrounds his future at the Basque club.

With negotiations over a contract extension failing to make progress, the Moroccan centre-back could be available as a free agent in the summer of 2025—a situation Sevilla hope to exploit.

Sevilla positioning for a smart transfer move

Abqar, 25, has established himself as a key figure in Alavés’ defensive line, featuring in all 24 of their La Liga matches this season.

However, despite his consistent performances, discussions over a new contract have reached an impasse, making his departure increasingly likely.

Sevilla, currently restructuring their squad, are monitoring the situation closely.

The Andalusian club, known for its astute transfer business, sees Abqar as a valuable long-term investment—especially given that he could be acquired without a transfer fee if he does not renew his deal at Alavés.

A defensive reinforcement for Sevilla

Sevilla have endured a challenging season, with defensive struggles contributing to their inconsistent performances.

Injuries and a lack of stability at the back have forced the club to explore new defensive options ahead of the summer transfer window.

Abqar’s experience in La Liga, coupled with his strong positional awareness and aerial ability, makes him an attractive prospect for Sevilla’s backline.

At 1.86 meters tall, he is physically imposing and comfortable playing in a high-pressing system—qualities that align well with Sevilla’s style of play.

Contract standoff at Alavés

Despite Alavés’ desire to retain their defensive mainstay, the likelihood of an extension remains slim.

With his current deal set to expire in June 2025, the club faces a crucial decision—either secure a contract renewal or risk losing him for free next summer.

The standoff between Abqar and Alavés’ management has left the door open for potential suitors, with Sevilla emerging as a front-runner.

If the situation remains unresolved, the Moroccan international could begin negotiating a pre-contract agreement with another club as early as January 2025.

What next for Abqar?

For now, Abqar remains focused on helping Alavés secure a strong finish in La Liga, but his long-term future appears to be heading towards a new challenge.

Sevilla will continue to monitor the situation, prepared to move quickly should the Moroccan defender become available on a free transfer.
