Sudan’s head coach, Kwesi Appiah, has voiced his optimism that the unifying force of football can help alleviate the ongoing civil unrest in the country.
Under Appiah’s guidance, Sudan has navigated significant obstacles, including playing all their qualifying matches away from home due to the civil conflict. Despite these challenges, the team achieved historic qualification for Africa’s premier football tournament, the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
A former captain of Ghana and coach of the Black Stars during the 2014 World Cup, Appiah has fostered a sense of resilience within the Sudanese squad, turning them into a beacon of hope for a war-torn nation.
The qualification, however, carries a bittersweet element, as it came at the expense of his native Ghana.
“My message to all Sudanese people is to continue supporting the team and strive for peace,” Appiah stated in an interview with CAF.
“I hope the fighting stops so that everyone can return home and be with their families. Football has the power to unite, and I believe Sudan can come together through the sport.”
Sudan will learn their group opponents for the 2025 AFCON qualifiers when the draw takes place on Monday.
