Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman has been named the CAF African Player of the Year at the prestigious 2024 CAF Awards.
The event, held in Marrakech, Morocco, celebrated Africa’s finest football talents, with Lookman emerging as the continent’s standout player.
The Atalanta star claimed the coveted title, outshining notable contenders, including South Africa’s Ronwen Williams, Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi, Guinea’s Serhou Guirassy, and Côte d’Ivoire’s Simon Adingra.
Lookman’s exceptional performances at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire played a pivotal role in his triumph.
The Nigerian forward was instrumental in his country’s journey to the final, where the Super Eagles showcased resilience and skill throughout the tournament.
His ability to deliver in crucial moments, combined with his consistency at both club and international levels, earned him the admiration of coaches and captains from CAF member associations who voted for the award.
Accepting the award, Lookman reflected on his journey, sharing an inspiring message of resilience and determination.
“Four years ago, I was down in front of the world, and today, I am the best player in Africa,” Lookman said, underscoring his remarkable rise from adversity to the pinnacle of African football.
He also took the opportunity to motivate young athletes, urging them to transform their challenges into opportunities for growth.
While Lookman claimed the top individual accolade, South Africa’s Ronwen Williams also had a memorable night, winning both the CAF Club Player of the Year and Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year awards.
