Kwesi Appiah has said he is hoping to achieve something significant which can help end the unrest in Sudan.
Sudan has been wracked by civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces since April 2023.
In October, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the Sudanese population were trapped in a “nightmare of violence, hunger, disease and displacement” and said almost 25 million people in the country were in need of humanitarian assistance.
Having masterminded their qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, Appiah, a former Ghana coach speaking to Asempa FM revealed that he is hoping to win something which will help end the civil war.
“I want the team to perform so we can achieve something for the people of Sudan which will bring an end to the unrest, and I believe that there is nothing too hard for God and I don’t underrate myself in anything,” the 63-year-old trainer said.
“I am hoping and believing that these players will support me so we can achieve something better for Sudan,” he added.
Due to the unrest, Sudan’s national team were forced to camp in Saudi Arabia with the playing body sole made up of players based at African clubs, many of whom play for Sudanese rivals Al Hilal and Al Merrikh. Both are temporarily playing in the Mauritanian league due to the unstable political situation in Sudan.
Morocco will host the next one which is scheduled to begin on December 21, 2025 and run until January 18, 2026.
