Algeria’s defensive strategy criticized by former star Benlamri

Former Algeria defender Djamel Benlamri has openly criticized the national team’s current defensive lineup, specifically the decision to use Aissa Mandi and Ramy Bensebaini as central defenders. Benlamri, a seasoned veteran of Algeria’s national squad, believes this tactical choice is detrimental to the team’s effectiveness on the pitch.

In his remarks, Benlamri expressed his concerns about the Fennecs’ approach under their current coach, stressing the need to reconsider player positioning, particularly for Mandi and Bensebaini.

He argued that both players would be more effective in their natural roles rather than as a central defensive duo.

Mandi, a defender for Villarreal, and Bensebaini, who recently joined Borussia Dortmund, have been played in central defense in recent matches, a move that Benlamri believes will ultimately harm Algeria’s defensive performance.

“The Mandi-Bensebaini pair is not suitable for selection; it will end up failing,” he said with conviction, emphasizing his skepticism.

According to Benlamri, these players’ strengths lie in their traditional roles, with Bensebaini more effective as a left-back and Mandi best utilized in a more versatile right-back position.

Benlamri went further, suggesting that the Algerian national team’s tactical decisions do not fully optimize the skillsets of its players.

He highlighted that Bensebaini’s experience as a left-back could be invaluable, particularly in the team’s defensive strategies.

Additionally, he pointed to Mandi’s adaptability across the defensive line as an asset that would be underutilized if he is solely assigned to central defense.

Beyond the defensive pairing, Benlamri expressed broader concerns about the treatment of local players versus dual nationals within the squad, an issue that has recently sparked debate among fans and former players alike.

His comments reflect growing discontent within certain circles over team management, as he believes that many homegrown talents are overlooked or improperly utilized in favor of foreign-based players.

“The management of local players and dual nationals needs balance,” he remarked, underscoring his belief that both groups should have fair opportunities and a chance to play to their strengths within the team.

Benlamri’s criticism adds to the ongoing dialogue surrounding Algeria’s national team setup.

Fans and analysts alike have voiced mixed reactions to coach Djamel Belmadi’s approach, and Benlamri’s comments have only intensified the discussion.

The Fennecs, who continue to prepare for upcoming international competitions, may face increased pressure to reassess their defensive tactics and player roles.

As Algeria moves forward in its campaign, Belmadi and his coaching staff may find themselves re-evaluating the current defensive strategy in light of these criticisms, hoping to refine their lineup to achieve better harmony and resilience on the field.
