Mauritius secures historic victory in World Cup qualifiers
In a remarkable turn of events during the 4th day of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers for the Africa Zone, Mauritius achieved a near-historic feat by defeating Eswatini 2-1 at the Côte d’Or National Sports Complex in Saint-Pierre on Tuesday.
Goals from Mike Gaspard, a promising young winger from CA Vitry, in the 18th minute, and former Olympique Lyonnais defender Lindsay Rose in the 43rd minute, propelled Club M to an unexpected victory.
Despite a late response from Eswatini’s Andy Magagula in the 66th minute, Mauritius held on to claim the three points.
A Victory Two Decades in the Making
This win marks Mauritius’ first success in World Cup qualifiers since 2003, when they defeated Uganda in the first round of the 2006 World Cup qualifiers, only to be eliminated later.
Since that victory, Mauritius had consistently struggled in World Cup qualifying rounds, often being knocked out in the preliminary stages or withdrawing from the competition entirely.
Ranked 183rd in the FIFA rankings, the Mauritian national team managed to overcome the odds against Eswatini, who are ranked 148th.
This victory is not just a testament to the team’s resilience but also a significant boost to their standing in Group D of the qualifiers.
Impact on Group D Standings
With this win, Mauritius temporarily closes the gap to three points behind group leaders Cameroon, who had previously defeated them 3-0 in November.
This result injects new life into Mauritius’ campaign and gives the team and its supporters renewed hope as they continue their quest for a spot in the 2026 World Cup.
Player Highlights
Mike Gaspard’s early goal set the tone for the match, showcasing the talent of the young winger who plays for CA Vitry in France’s National 3.
Lindsay Rose, with his extensive experience in European football, provided a crucial second goal that ultimately secured the victory.
Their contributions were vital in achieving this landmark result for Mauritius.
As the qualifiers progress, Mauritius will look to build on this momentum, hoping to further disrupt the standings in Group D.
This historic win not only marks a significant achievement for the island nation but also highlights the potential for future successes on the international stage.
