Gambia, Guinea book 2027 U-20 AFCON places after WAFU A final showdown

The Gambia and Guinea have secured qualification for the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana after progressing to the final of the WAFU A U-20 tournament.

The Young Scorpions and the Young Syli National will represent the West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone A at the continental competition after navigating their respective challenges in the qualifying tournament.

The Gambia sealed their place in the final with a 2-0 victory over Sierra Leone in the semi-finals at the Stade Mamadou Konate in Bamako, Mali, while Guinea also advanced to complete the region’s two qualifying spots.

Gambia overcome Guinea to top Group A

The Gambia had earlier demonstrated their quality in the group stage, defeating Guinea 2-1 in their final Group A fixture at the Stade Ouezzin Coulibaly.

The Young Scorpions entered the encounter needing only a point to guarantee progression to the semi-finals but claimed all three points through goals from Agibou Dibba and Francis Gomez.

Their victory followed a 1-0 win over Mali in their second group match, giving them the momentum needed to finish the group stage strongly.

Guinea had also booked their semi-final place before facing The Gambia, having beaten Liberia 1-0 in their second group outing.

However, the defeat against the Young Scorpions left Guinea second in Group A with six points, one behind The Gambia, who finished top with seven points from three matches.

The result set the tone for the knockout stage, with both nations ultimately securing qualification for the 2027 continental championship.

Young Scorpions eliminate Sierra Leone

The Gambia continued their impressive run in the semi-finals, defeating Sierra Leone 2-0 at the Stade Mamadou Konate to reach the tournament’s final.

Sierra Leone, known as the Shooting Stars, needed a victory to keep their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 U-20 AFCON alive but were unable to overcome a disciplined Gambian side.

The defeat ended Sierra Leone’s campaign and confirmed that they would miss the continental tournament scheduled to take place in Ghana next year.

For The Gambia, the victory represented another important step in their quest for regional honours while securing their place among Africa’s leading youth football nations at the upcoming championship.
