Zamalek faces turmoil over October land crisis as fans call for action
Egypt’s Minister of Sports, Ashraf Sobhi, has addressed the deepening crisis at Zamalek Club concerning the disputed October land.
In a TV interview, Sobhi affirmed that the Ministry of Youth and Sports is strictly following legal procedures and that the land file is now in the hands of legal authorities, after close coordination with the Minister of Housing. “The matter is now under the law’s jurisdiction. We’ll have to wait and see what happens next,” Sobhi explained, highlighting the government’s effort to support stability at the club.
The October land crisis, which threatens Zamalek’s financial future and expansion plans, has not only unsettled the management but sparked fear and anger among devoted fans. The club’s board insists they possess all valid documents, but admits time is running out. Social media erupted with the hashtag “Save Zamalek, President,” as supporters bypassed traditional appeals and called on Egypt’s leadership to intervene.
Former star Mahmoud “Shikabala” Abdul Razeq joined the chorus, stating, “Zamalek is a pillar of Egyptian soft power.” Vice President Hesham Nasr made clear, “The predicament is beyond anything any board can handle alone.” The club’s new executive office was formed to speed up decisions, but as financial stress grows, Zamalek’s future hangs in the balance.
