Youssouf Fofana gives green light to proposed Lyon switch

French-Malian defensive midfielder Youssouf Fofana has agreed to join Olympique Lyonnais on loan from AC Milan, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The proposed move for the 27-year-old is expected to include an option for Olympique Lyonnais to buy him permanently. The two clubs are continuing discussions over the final details of the agreement, with the deal yet to be completed.

Fofana’s next move could see him return to Ligue 1 after two seasons in Italy. He joined AC Milan in 2024 following more than four seasons with AS Monaco, where he established himself as a powerful and experienced presence in midfield.

The midfielder is understood to have moved away from the centre of new AC Milan manager Ruben Amorim’s plans, creating the possibility of a departure before the end of the summer transfer window. Fofana remains under contract with AC Milan until 30 June 2028.

Olympique Lyonnais are seeking to strengthen their midfield and see Fofana’s athleticism and experience as a strong fit for the squad. Negotiations with AC Milan are continuing, with the remaining points of the loan arrangement still needing to be settled.

Once the agreement is finalised, Fofana is expected to be given permission to travel and complete the necessary formalities ahead of his arrival in Lyon. The transfer could therefore be concluded quickly, with the closure of the transfer window approaching.

Fofana’s estimated market value is €23m. A loan deal with an option to buy would give Olympique Lyonnais the opportunity to assess the player in Ligue 1 before deciding whether to make the move permanent.

The potential transfer comes as AC Milan prepare for their third match of the Italian league season, against Juventus. Betting company 1xbet lists AC Milan as favourites for that fixture, with odds of 1.98 for a home win. A draw is priced at 3.20, while Juventus are offered at 3.40.

Fofana’s move to AC Milan in 2024 followed a lengthy spell at AS Monaco. His possible return to France would bring an end, at least temporarily, to his period in Italy and provide Olympique Lyonnais with an experienced defensive midfield option as they look to reinforce their team.
