World Cup 2026: Egypt defender Yasser Ibrahim hit with CAF sanction ahead of tournament
Egypt international Yasser Ibrahim has been handed a disciplinary sanction by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) just days before the Pharaohs begin their campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.
The defender’s punishment stems from incidents that followed Al Ahly’s CAF Champions League quarter-final elimination against Tunisian giants Esperance.
Suspension and Fine Confirmed
According to reports, the Al Ahly centre back has received a two-match suspension from CAF following events that occurred during the team’s clash with Esperance in Rades.
However, only one of the matches will be served immediately, meaning Ibrahim is expected to miss Al Ahly’s first continental fixture next season.
The second match suspension has been suspended for a period of one year and will only come into effect if the player commits a similar offence during that timeframe. In addition, CAF has imposed a fine of $5,000 on the Egyptian defender.
Incident Behind the Punishment
The disciplinary action relates to Ibrahim’s conduct after Al Ahly’s elimination from the competition.
Video footage circulating on social media showed the defender making a controversial gesture towards Esperance supporters as he left the pitch following the final whistle.
The incident occurred after Al Ahly’s quarter-final exit. The Egyptian side lost the first leg 1-0 in Tunisia before suffering a 3-2 defeat at home, crashing out of the tournament with a 4-2 aggregate loss.
Focus Shifts to the World Cup
Despite the sanction, the punishment will not affect Ibrahim’s participation with Egypt at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Pharaohs are scheduled to open their campaign against Belgium on June 15 before taking on New Zealand and Iran on June 22 and June 27, respectively.
Al Ahly Set for Confederation Cup Campaign
Al Ahly finished third in the Egyptian Premier League last season, a result that means the club is currently set to compete in the CAF Confederation Cup during the next continental campaign.
For Ibrahim, attention will now turn to helping Egypt make a strong start at the World Cup before returning to club duties later in the year.
